Substantial Online Disruption Hits Dozens Websites and Applications

A widespread internet disruption has impacted numerous sites and applications worldwide, with users noting issues accessing the internet after problems at Amazon’s online infrastructure system.

The affected apps comprise Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with a host of Amazon-owned services including its primary shopping site and the Ring security doorbell company.

Throughout Britain, Lloyds bank was disrupted as well as its subsidiaries the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were further notifications of issues using the the tax authority website on Monday morning. Furthermore across the UK, many Ring customers used networks to report their home gadgets were malfunctioning.

Solely in the United Kingdom, accounts of issues on specific applications reached the many thousands for each platform.

The company stated that the problem started in the eastern region of the America at AWS, a unit that supplies vital online backbone for a host of firms, who rent out resources on the company's servers. Amazon Web Services is the world’s largest online services service.

Shortly after late night (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), the company announced “increased failure rates and latencies” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the east coast of the America. The ripple effect was seen to hit apps worldwide, and the Downdetector site indicating issues with the corresponding services in various regions.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a tool that monitors internet outages, also reported a surge in issues on the start of the week, including several cases located in the Virginia area, the site of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the outage originated.
