Caelan Doris Included in Ireland Squad While McCarthy Misses Out

Rugby squad selection update

Returning head coach the Ireland coach has selected skipper Doris in his Ireland team for the fall internationals, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in the start of May, recently returned to provincial training, with doubts lingering whether he will be fit to play against New Zealand in the US on November 1.

Lock McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot issue suffered during the first British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in July.

Ulster forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash are not included due to fitness concerns, while number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing hip surgery following the Lions tour.

Dublin province prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole new member in the 34-man group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped Munster pair Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will travel to Chicago as "reserves".

Following playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a repeat of their previous encounter, Ireland host the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented the coach, back to national team duties after a break to lead the Lions tour to Australia.

In a mostly experienced selection, Leinster's Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will again vie for the starting fly-half spot. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley set to face off for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 chosen as Farrell deciding not to calling up the province's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international victories over Georgia and the Lobos. There is also a recall for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey form an experienced group of centre options. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the youngster is additionally a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at full-back.

Outside backs Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his national team debut during the summer with a brace each in the wins over Georgia and Portugal.

McCarthy is the only new addition in the Irish pack. The front rower has been in two of Leinster's URC league games this season and featured in the second string's loss by England in the English city earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a cap.

Munster second row Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, and experienced Northern province second row Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions matches during the tour, is poised to cover for Doris if the skipper does not regain fitness in time to face New Zealand.

The national team will assemble in Dublin on Monday before traveling to the US on Tuesday.
